Chapter 17

1 MOREOVER Ahithophel said to Absalom, Let me now choose twelve thousand men, and I will arise and pursue David this night;

2 And I will overtake him while he is weary and weak, and I will throw him into a panic, and all the people who are with him shall flee, and I will kill the king only;

3 And I will bring back all the people to you, just as those whom you sought have come back; so all the people shall be in peace.

4 And the saying pleased Absalom well, and all the elders of Israel.

5 Then Absalom said, Call now Hushai the Archite also, and let us likewise hear what he has to say.

6 And when Hushai came to Absalom, Absalom said to him, Ahithophel has spoken after this manner; shall we do what he has said? If not, you speak.

7 And Hushai said to Absalom, The counsel that Ahithophel has given is not good at this time.

8 For said Hushai to Absalom. You know well that your father and his servants are mighty men, and they are furious as a bear that devours the prey in the field; moreover, your father is a man of war, and will not spend the night with the people.

9 Behold now, he has hidden in one of the countries or in some other place; and when we attack them according to the first counsel, then the rumor will spread that there has been a great slaughter among the people who follow Absalom.

10 Even though he is valiant and his heart is as the heart of a lion, he shall utterly melt; for all Israel knows that your father is a mighty man and that those who are with him are valiant men.

11 Therefore I counsel that when all Israel is gathered to you from Dan to Beer-sheba, then you yourself march in their midst.

12 So we shall go against him in some place where he shall be found, and we will light upon him as the dew falls on the ground; and of him and of all the men who are with him there shall not be left even one.

13 Moreover, if he should enter into a city, then all Israel shall cast ropes on it, and we will drag it into the valley, and they shall leave there not even a cricket.

14 And Absalom and all the men of Israel said, The counsel of Hushai the Archite is better than the counsel of Ahithophel. For the LORD had decreed to defeat the good counsel of Ahithophel so that the LORD might bring evil upon Absalom.

15 Then Hushai said to Zadok and to Abiathar the priests, Thus and thus did Ahithophel counsel Absalom and all the men of Israel; and thus and thus have I counseled.

16 Now therefore send quickly and tell David, saying, Do not spend the night in the plain of the wilderness, but pass over, lest you and all the people who are with you be destroyed.

17 Now Nathan and Ahimaaz were standing by the side of the fountain of the palace, so they might not be seen to enter the city; and a maidservant went and told them; and they went and told King David.

18 Nevertheless a lad saw them, and told Absalom; but they both went away, and came into the house of a man of Beth-hurim who had a well in his courtyard; and they went down into it.

19 And the woman took and spread a covering over the well's mouth, and put barley upon it; and the thing was not known.

20 And when Absalom's servants came to the woman at the house, they said, Where are Ahimaaz and Nathan? And the woman said to them, They have gone from here, for they wanted water; but when they could not find any, they returned to Jerusalem.

21 And after Absalom's servants had gone, they came up out of the well and went and told King David, and said to him, Arise and cross quickly over the water; for thus has Ahithophel counselled against you.

22 Then David arose and all the people who were with him and they crossed the Jordan; by early morning there was not one left who had not crossed the Jordan.

23 And when Ahithophel saw that his counsel was not followed, he saddled his ass and arose and went home to his city; and he put his household in order and hanged himself and died and was buried in the sepulchre of his father.

24 And David came to Mahanaim. And Absalom crossed the Jordan, he and all the men of Israel with him.

25 And Absalom had appointed Amasa over the army instead of Joab. Amasa was the son of an Israelite whose name was Ithra, who went in to Abigail the daughter of Nahash, sister of Zoriah Joab's mother.

26 So Israel and Absalom encamped in the land of Gilead.

27 When David came to Mahanaim. Abishai, the son of Nahash of Rabbath of the children of Ammon, and Machir the son of Gamil of Lo-debar, and Barzillai the Gileadite of Dobelin

28 Brought beds and carpets and earthen vessels and wheat and barley and parched wheat and flour and beans and lentils

29 And honey and butter and sheep and cheese of cows, and offered them to David, and to the people who were with him, to eat; for they said, The people are hungry and weary and thirsty in the wilderness.

1 Ахитофел сказал Авессалому: «Позволь мне выбрать двенадцать тысяч человек, и я отправлюсь в погоню за Давидом этой ночью.

2 Я нападу на него, когда он утомится и ослабеет. Я напугаю его, и все его люди разбегутся, но я убью только царя Давида.

3 Затем я верну тебе всех людей, подобно невесте, которая возвращается к своему мужу. Ты ведь хочешь убить только одного человека, Давида. Если он умрёт, тогда весь народ вернётся с миром».

4 Этот план понравился Авессалому и всем старейшинам Израиля.

5 Но Авессалом сказал: «Позовите теперь Хусия архитянина. Я хочу услышать, что он скажет».

6 Хусий пришёл к Авессалому, и Авессалом спросил его: «Вот совет Ахитофела. Должны ли мы сделать, как он сказал? Если нет, то скажи своё слово».

7 Хусий ответил Авессалому: «На этот раз совет, который дал Ахитофел, не годится».

8 «Ты знаешь своего отца и его людей, — продолжал Хусий. — Они храбры и опасны, как дикая медведица, у которой отняли медвежат. Твой отец — опытный воин, он не останется ночевать со своими людьми.

9 Он теперь, вероятно, скрывается в какой-нибудь пещере или в другом месте. Если твой отец первым нападёт на твоих людей, то народ услышит об этом и подумает: „Люди, последовавшие за Авессаломом, терпят поражение!”

10 И тогда даже самые храбрые станут дрожать от страха, так как всему Израилю известно, что твой отец — храбрый воин, и люди, которые с ним, тоже храбрецы.

11 Поэтому вот что я советую вам: пусть соберётся к тебе весь Израиль от Дана до Вирсавии. Людей будет множество, как песка на морском берегу, и ты сам должен повести их на битву.

12 Мы нападём на Давида, где бы он ни находился. Мы обрушимся на него как роса, которая падает на землю, и тогда ни он, и ни один из его людей не останутся в живых.

13 А если он спрячется в каком-нибудь городе, то все израильтяне принесут к тому городу верёвки, мы завалим стены и стянем камни в долину. От того города не останется ни одного камешка».

14 Тогда Авессалом и все израильтяне сказали: «Совет Хусия архитянина лучше совета Ахитофела». Они сказали это, потому что Господь решил сделать негодным хороший совет Ахитофела, чтобы навести бедствие на Авессалома.

15 Хусий рассказал всё это священникам Садоку и Авиафару. Он рассказал им, какой совет дал Ахитофел Авессалому и израильским старейшинам и какой совет дал он сам. Хусий сказал им:

16 «Теперь немедленно пошлите гонца к Давиду и скажите ему, чтобы он не оставался на ночь у брода в пустыне, а во что бы то ни стало перешёл через реку Иордан. Тогда царь и все его люди не погибнут».

17 Сыновья священников, Ионафан и Ахимаас, ждали у источника Рогель. Они не хотели показываться в городе, и поэтому служанка пошла к ним и рассказала им всё, а они должны были пойти и известить царя Давида.

18 Но один юноша увидел их и донёс Авессалому. Оба они быстро скрылись и пришли в дом одного человека в Бахуриме. У него во дворе был колодец, и они спустились туда.

19 Жена этого человека взяла покрывало, растянула его над отверстием колодца и насыпала на него зерно. И никто ничего не знал об этом.

20 Слуги Авессалома пришли к женщине в дом и спросили: «Где Ахимаас и Ионафан?» Женщина ответила им: «Они уже перешли ручей». Слуги Авессалома пошли их искать, но никого не нашли и возвратились в Иерусалим.

21 Когда они ушли, Ахимаас и Ионафан вылезли из колодца и пошли известить царя Давида. Они сказали ему: «Поскорее переходите через реку, потому что так советовал Ахитофел».

22 Тогда Давид и все его люди перешли реку Иордан ещё до восхода солнца.

23 Когда Ахитофел увидел, что израильтяне не исполнили его совет, он оседлал своего осла и вернулся домой в свой родной город. Он составил завещание своей семье и повесился там, и был похоронен в могиле своего отца.

24 Давид пришёл в Маханаим, а Авессалом и все израильтяне, идущие с ним, перешли реку Иордан.

25 Авессалом поставил Амессая вместо Иоава начальником своего войска. Амессай был сыном измаильтянина по имени Иефера. Матерью Амессая была Авигея, дочь Нааса, сестра Саруи, матери Иоава.

26 Авессалом и израильтяне расположились лагерем на Галаадской земле.

27 Когда Давид пришёл в Маханаим, Сови, сын Нааса из Раввы аммонитской, и Махир, сын Аммиила из Ло-Девара, и Верзеллий галаадитянин из Роглима

28 сказали: «Народ устал в пустыне и хочет есть и пить». Они принесли Давиду и его людям постели, блюда и другую посуду. Они также принесли пшеницу и ячмень, муку и пшено, бобы и чечевицу, жареные зёрна, мёд, масло, овец и сыр из коровьего молока.

4 And the saying pleased Absalom well, and all the elders of Israel.	4 Этот план понравился Авессалому и всем старейшинам Израиля.
5 Then Absalom said, Call now Hushai the Archite also, and let us likewise hear what he has to say.	5 Но Авессалом сказал: «Позовите теперь Хусия архитянина. Я хочу услышать, что он скажет».
6 And when Hushai came to Absalom, Absalom said to him, Ahithophel has spoken after this manner; shall we do what he has said? If not, you speak.	6 Хусий пришёл к Авессалому, и Авессалом спросил его: «Вот совет Ахитофела. Должны ли мы сделать, как он сказал? Если нет, то скажи своё слово».

8 For said Hushai to Absalom. 11 Therefore I counsel that when all Israel is gathered to you from Dan to Beer-sheba, then you yourself march in their midst.	11 Поэтому вот что я советую вам: пусть соберётся к тебе весь Израиль от Дана до Вирсавии. 20 And when Absalom's servants came to the woman at the house, they said, Where are Ahimaaz and Nathan?
